Man
has always liked this area to settle down and they have left
numerous remains since long ago .
Vestiges from the Paleolithic Period have appeared here as well
as some megalithic monuments from the end of prehistoric times
in an area called ´Los Lagos` (The lakes).
The Cantabrian people had their settings or ´Castros`
surrounding this area and at the moment there is an exhibition
of a Cantabrian village in Argüeso.
After the Cantabrian wars , the region was dominated by the
Romans. From them we have the ruins of the Roman
city of Juliobriga .Since
then this area has been an important communications junction
between the coast and the plains depending in the Middle Ages
on the Marquis of Santillana.
From this time we can also enjoy the Castle
of Argüeso, recently
restored and worth visiting.

In
the West of this region is the Hijar Land with high mountains
whose summits are at more than 2000 m above sea level forming
somewhat like an amphitheatre that is the union of two mountain
ranges starting from the ´Tres Mares`Peak (Three Seas)
where three rivers flow towards three of the seas that surround
the country . River Nansa that ends in the Cantabrian Sea, River
Pisuerga that after joining the River Duero, goes to the Athlantic
Ocean, and River Hijar , that later on joins River Ebro that
starts in Fontibre, 4 km from the ´´Casona` of Naveda
and ends in the Mediterranean sea.
