The variety of its nature is due to the fact that this area is a boundary between two different climates: Mediterranean from the south plains and Athlantic, and also the medium and high mountains climate.

The best Oak tree forests are in the Robleda mountain of Villacantid , Lanchares ,not very big but it has magnificent trees and also in the Valderredible area. The biggest of them is The Higedo mountain oak forest.
There are small beech tree forests spread all over the south of Campóo such as the one of Hormiguera. But the biggest ones are in Alto Campóo, they can be seen when driving up along the road of Brañavieja . There are also some birch trees but the vegetation here is mainly bushes and shrubs that are mostly covered in snow during the year.
This vegetation varies during the year. Sometimes we can see the mountains covered in snow and sometimes we can see green and leafy fields with wild flowers in the spring time. Summer time is very nice and the vegetation in on its summit and it finishes with the first snow in Alto Campóo. Autumn is damper and it is the time when wild nuts and berries are collected.
A wild animal life can be easily observed in this privileged environment. Thus the dam is home for many different species of water birds , specially in winter. In this area it is very normal to see deer, roe deer, boars and pine marten.
But the most emblematic species in Campóo is the stork . There is a colony of more than 20 nests in Villaescusa, next to the road.
