The buildings we can see in Alto Campoo
area are simple with just one semi circular apse not very ornamented.
Everything is related to the fact that even though this building
is very humble , it is the most remarkable building in the village
and frequently is far from the houses and usually on a hill.
Apart from the architectural interest , they are remarkable
for their sculpture, having stone animals and capitals of great
interest
Sometimes this buildings are the continuation
of a previous cult or belief . This is the example of Castrillo
de Valdelomar whose church is built on top of a rock which has
anthropomorphic carvings , testimony of the previous history.
In Santa Maria of Valverde they placed a romanesque steeple
in the rock church, and in San Martin de Elines in its magnificent
collegiate church which has several different remains from other
cultures,there are two Mozarabic arches.
In Campoo de Suso , the main Romanesque vestiges are Villacantid
church (4km) Cervatos Collegiate church, Bolmir and Retortillo
churches where the Juliobriga Roman ruins can be found (8km)
San Martin de Hoyos and Valdeolea which we will mention later
on.
Romanesque Paintings can only be found in San Martin de Elines
but some time later in the Gothic period , some of this buildings
were used as frames for more complicated religious scenes and
paintings such as the Valdeolea churches: Mata de Hoz , Las
Henestrosas, La Loma
